Habit
It is a basally branching columnar cactus, 15-90 cm tall.
Central Spines
1 to 2 rarely more than 1 cm long.
Flowers
Diurnal, funnelform, 7-10 cm long, mostly bright red produced near the end of the stems. Throat dark red, filaments fuchsia. Perianth-segments narrow, acuminate, 4 to 5 cm long, dark pink to dark red. Anthers clear pastel and stigma pure white. Scales on the ovary narrow, 10 to 12 mm long, a little hairy in their axils.
Spines
Needle-like, subulate, unequal, yellowish to brownish.
Ribs
12 to 18.
Stem
Globose to short-cylindric, 5-10 cm, in diameter.
Radial Spines
9 to 11 brownish 5-10 mm long.
Areoles
Whitish brown about 1 cm apart.
