Habit
The "mountain" form of Echinocereus viridiflorusSN|11071]]SN|11071]] corresponds to the plants in our collections known as var. montanus. This variety grows significantly depressed (mostly less than 2 cm tall), solitary or in low clusters and was probably collected in Colorado. The absence central spines, or vice versa an exceptionally long and stout central spine, led to the isolation and selection of other horticultural varieties without taxonomic significance.
Description
Echinocereus viridiflorusSN|11071]]SN|11071]] v. montanus is a cold hardy species of perennial, succulent plant in the Cactus family (Cactaceae). This is one the several varieties of the morphologically variable Echinocereus viridiflorusSN|11071]]SN|11071]], a taxon growing widespread in south and central United States of America. The variety “montanus” is a nomen nudum (undescribed name) sometimes encountered in European nurseries. The name is actually invalid.
