Description

Etymology: From the Greek strombos which is top-shaped or shell-shaped referring to the shape of plants as they grow with a wider rounded top and narrowing toward the base

Like most all of the small cactus that are found in Mexico, those belonging to the genus Strombocactus have received a disproportionately high amount of attention by researchers. Whatever it is that attracts researchers to this group of plants is uncertain, but the result is usually the creation of many subspecies, varieties, and superfluous names. The genus Strombocactus, until recently consisted of a single species, but a new species has been created largely due to differences in seed structure. The plant stems are small globose with turbercles ending with scattered spines, falling off with age. Flowers arise from the apex and are white, cream or pink.
